Lot#: 415

DESCRIPTION: APW - E. Howard & Co, Boston, Series III w/Mershon's patent center regulator, 15J, N-S (just over 19S), 18K gold original F&Co HC with gold cuvette, white enamel SS dial with early style script signature, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#5744. Gross weight of assembled watch 88.9 dwt (138.3 g). The uncompensated gold solid balance of this example is a feature found only among a small fraction of Howard's early keywind production, and this feature in combination with the Mershon's patent regulator is quite rare. A review of the Howard factory records donated by Dana Blackwell to the Smithsonian Institution reveals a total of only 52 serial numbers of Series III production noted with this combination of features, and the present watch is found in a run of eight made spanning serials 5743 to 5750 that are listed in these records with a start date of November 5, 1864. CONDITION: Mvt: GRO...
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, plates with strong overall gilt tone, some mild small spots, barrel with somewhat darkened gilt tone, some oxide to steelwork; dial with two hls at edge outside 7; fine hands, spades of hour and minute with some oxide; case shows light wear, some slight dings which are mainly evident only to inner lid surfaces as mild ripplings of reflection, good engraving detail; tight bow; good glass crystal.
ESTIMATE: $2000 - $2800
